Scientia Professor Kaarin Jane Anstey is an ARC Laureate Fellow and Director of the UNSW Ageing Futures Institute at the University of New South Wales. She holds a BA (Hons) from the University of Sydney and a PhD from the University of Queensland, and is a registered psychologist. Anstey’s research focuses on cognitive resilience, cognitive ageing, dementia epidemiology and dementia prevention, as well as older driver safety, where she has developed and validated risk assessment tools and interventions. She previously served as Deputy Director of the ARC Centre of Excellence in Population Ageing Research from 2017 to 2024 and as Director of the Dementia Collaborative Research Centre from 2010 to 2021. In 2017 she established the International Research Network on Dementia Prevention.
Anstey has held advisory roles with the World Health Organization since 2016 and is a member of its Guideline Development Group for dementia risk reduction guidelines. She is also a member of the NHMRC Clinical Practice Guidelines on Dementia Guideline Development Group, Chair of the AIHW Expert Advisory Committee on the Burden of Neurological Diseases, Expert Advisor on Dementia for AIHW, a member of the World Dementia Council and Vice Chair of the Global Council on Brain Health. Her work has produced extensive publications including over 650 journal articles and numerous book chapters on topics such as cognitive decline, dementia risk scores and healthy ageing. Anstey maintains conjoint appointments as Senior Principal Research Scientist at Neuroscience Research Australia and leads major cohort studies including the PATH Through Life Project.
