Kari Tsushima is an Associate Professor at Saitama University affiliated with the Center for Gender, Diversity and Inclusion in the Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences. She earned a PhD in American Studies from Doshisha University in March 2024. Her research focuses on Hannah Arendt, ethics of care, and feminist theory. Tsushima has held previous positions including Specially Appointed Assistant Professor at Doshisha University, part-time lecturer roles at institutions such as Kobe Jogakuin University, Kyoto Women's University, and Kindai University, as well as serving as a Harassment Specialist Counselor at Kobe Gakuin University and a JSPS Research Fellow (DC2).
Her publications include the 2024 peer-reviewed paper "A care theory that resists both scorn and sanctification: reading Arendt's thought from the perspective of feminist care theory," the 2021 paper "Carers and world alienation," and earlier works such as "アーレントの「リトルロック考」を読みなおす」 (2015) and "アーレント思想における「精神的活動力」の道徳性」 (2014). She co-translated the book "Caring Democracy: Markets, Equality, and Justice" by Joan C. Tronto, published in 2024. Tsushima has presented at conferences including the Japanese Arendt Society and the Japan Ethics Society. She teaches courses related to care in diverse societies, gender and social welfare, and women's studies. She is the recipient of JSPS grants including a 2026-2030 Young Researcher grant on the political origins of care ethics from Arendt to Sara Ruddick.
