About Kazuhiro

Professor Kazuhiro Kawamura is a Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Juntendo University Faculty of Medicine. He completed his graduate studies at Akita University and conducted postdoctoral research at Akita University and Stanford University. His research focuses on ovarian physiology, reproductive endocrinology, and infertility. Professor Kawamura has authored over 160 papers and 70 book chapters in these fields. He is the current director of the Japan Society for Reproductive Endocrinology and the Japan Society for Ova Research, and he serves on the boards of many prestigious national and international medical associations. He is one of the pioneers of infertility treatment for premature ovarian insufficiency (POI) and developed the in-vitro activation (IVA) technique, which is now widely used for the treatment of POI. Recent work by Professor Kawamura and collaborators has explored the potential of the antifibrotic drug finerenone to restore fertility in POI through reduction of ovarian fibrosis, with findings published in Science in 2026 demonstrating follicle development in mouse models and preliminary human studies.

Professor Kawamura holds appointments including Professor of Reproductive Medicine within the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Juntendo University. His contributions include advancing understanding of follicle activation mechanisms and developing less invasive approaches to infertility treatment. He continues to lead research efforts in reproductive medicine at Juntendo University Faculty of Medicine.
