Professor Kehinde Andrews is Professor of Black Studies in the School of Social Sciences at Birmingham City University. He is the first professor of Black studies in the United Kingdom and led the team that established the first Black studies degree programme in Europe at the university. Andrews earned a master’s degree in social research and a PhD in sociology and cultural studies from the University of Birmingham in 2011, with a thesis entitled Back to Black: Black Radicalism and the Supplementary School Movement. His research focuses on resisting racism, race and inequality, Black radicalism, and movements for social change. He is director of the Centre for Critical Social Research at Birmingham City University and co-chair of the Black Studies Association. Andrews is the founder of the Harambee Organisation of Black Unity. He is an academic, activist and author whose publications include the books Resisting Racism: Race, Inequality and the Black Supplementary School Movement (2013), Back to Black: Retelling Black Radicalism for the 21st Century (2018) and The New Age of Empire: How Racism and Colonialism Still Rule the World (2021). He is editor of the Blackness in Britain book series and has contributed articles to outlets including The Guardian, The Independent, The Washington Post and CNN. Andrews regularly appears on television and radio programmes discussing issues of race, racism and Black political thought. He received an honorary degree of Doctor of Education from Bath Spa University in 2022.
