About Keith

Keith Humphreys is the Esther Ting Memorial Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University and Professor by courtesy of Health Policy. He joined Stanford in 1995 and was appointed to an endowed chair in 2017. He serves as Section Director for Mental Health Policy in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. Humphreys holds a B.A. in Psychology from Michigan State University (1988), an A.M. in Clinical/Community Psychology from the University of Illinois (1991), and a Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of Illinois (1993). He is also a Senior Research Career Scientist at the VA Palo Alto Health Care System and an Honorary Professor of Psychiatry at the Institute of Psychiatry, King’s College London.

Humphreys’ research focuses on the prevention, treatment, and recovery from addictive disorders, the evaluation of professionally administered treatments and peer-operated self-help groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous, and the translation of addiction science into public policy. He has authored or co-authored over 400 scientific publications. His policy contributions include service as Senior Policy Advisor in the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (2009–2010), testimonies before U.S. congressional committees and parliaments in Canada and the United Kingdom, and co-direction of the Stanford Network on Addiction Policy. He chairs the Stanford Lancet Commission on the North American Opioid Crisis. Humphreys received the Honorary Officer of the Order of the British Empire from Queen Elizabeth II in 2022 and the Under Secretary’s Award for Outstanding Achievement in Health Services Research from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs in 2021.
