About Keizo

Keizo Tomonaga is Professor at the Institute for Life and Medical Sciences, Kyoto University, where he also serves as Director. He holds appointments as Professor in the Graduate School of Biostudies and the Graduate School of Medicine, Department of Molecular Virology. He earned a Ph.D. in Veterinary Medicine from the University of Tokyo and a D.V.M. His research focuses on RNA viruses, particularly bornaviruses and influenza virus, including studies of replication and pathogenesis mechanisms, endogenous bornavirus-like elements in mammalian genomes, and the development of RNA virus-based vectors for gene and cell therapies.

Prior to his current role, which began in 2011, Tomonaga served as Associate Professor (2000–2011) and Assistant Professor (1999–2000) at Osaka University Research Institute for Microbial Diseases. Earlier positions include Assistant at Hokkaido University Institute of Immunological Science (1998–1999), Special Research Fellow with the American Leukemia Society at Tufts University (1997–1998), JSPS Overseas Special Research Fellow at Tufts University (1995–1997), and JSPS Special Research Fellow at the University of Tokyo (1994–1995). His work contributes to virology, veterinary medicine, and biomedical applications through ongoing investigations of virus-host interactions and vector technologies.
