Kenji Miyamoto is a Professor in the Faculty of Science and Technology, Department of Biosciences and Informatics at Keio University, where he also serves in the Graduate School of Science and Technology, School of Chemistry, Life Science, and Informatics, Curriculum of Biosciences and Informatics. He earned his undergraduate degree from Keio University Faculty of Science and Engineering, Department of Chemistry in 1988, followed by a master’s degree in 1990 and a doctoral degree in 1992 from the Graduate School of Science and Engineering, Division of Chemistry at the same institution. Prior to his academic career, Miyamoto worked as a researcher at Kaneka Corporation’s Biochemical Research Laboratory (now Life Science Institute) from 1992 to 2002. He later completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Greifswald in Germany from 2006 to 2007.
Miyamoto’s research focuses on biotransformation, protein engineering, bioorganic chemistry, and plastic-degrading bacteria, with an emphasis on enzymatic reactions for the transformation of synthetic substrates under mild conditions to support sustainable green chemistry. His work includes the development of artificial enzymes and the study of microorganisms involved in plastic degradation. He has authored or co-authored numerous peer-reviewed papers and books, including contributions to Green Biocatalysis (2016) and Chemical Biology (2012). Miyamoto maintains an active research profile with significant citation impact in his fields.
