Dr Kieran Docherty is a Clinical Senior Lecturer in Cardiology with an interest in Heart Failure and Clinical Trials in the School of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Health at the University of Glasgow and an Honorary Consultant Cardiologist at Glasgow Royal Infirmary. He completed his PhD under the supervision of Professor John McMurray and Professor Mark Petrie, examining the effect of neprilysin inhibition on left ventricular remodelling in patients with asymptomatic left ventricular systolic dysfunction late after myocardial infarction through the RECOVER-LV trial. Dr Docherty was Co-Principal Investigator of the EMPRESS-MI trial studying the effect of SGLT2 inhibition in acute myocardial infarction in patients at high risk of developing heart failure and is Principal Investigator of the TARTAN-HF trial examining a targeted natriuretic peptide-based screening strategy in patients with diabetes and risk factors for heart failure. He is involved in several large randomised controlled drug and device trials in heart failure as a member of Trial Steering Committees and as National Lead Investigator.
Dr Docherty is a Fellow of the European Society of Cardiology and the ESC Heart Failure Association. He was awarded the Young Clinical Investigator Award at the ESC Heart Failure Association Congress in 2022 and is a Cardiovascular Clinical Trialist’s Forum Future Clinical Trialist Fellow. He has co-authored over 140 publications in journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine, the Lancet and JAMA and is the author of chapters in the ESC Textbook of Cardiovascular Medicine and Heart Failure: A Companion to Braunwald's Heart Disease. His research interests include the mechanisms and treatment of cardiovascular disease with a focus on heart failure, clinical trials evaluating the effects of drugs on left ventricular remodelling, and improving diagnostic pathways for heart failure incorporating circulating biomarkers and echocardiography.
