About Lawrence

Lawrence R. Lustig, MD, is the Howard W. Smith Professor and Chair of the Department of Otolaryngology—Head and Neck Surgery at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. He also serves as otolaryngologist-in-chief at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center, a position he has held since July 2014. A leading expert in hearing loss and neurotology, Dr. Lustig treats the full spectrum of ear disorders in adults and children, as well as skull base disease. His clinical specialties include cochlear implants, skull base surgery, balance disorders, and genetic forms of hearing loss.

Dr. Lustig earned his bachelor’s degree in microbiology from the University of California, Berkeley, and his medical degree from the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine in 1992, graduating with honors. He completed his residency in otolaryngology/head and neck surgery at UCSF and a fellowship in otology, neurotology, and skull base surgery at Johns Hopkins University. Prior to joining Columbia, he served on the faculty at Johns Hopkins University and held multiple leadership roles at UCSF, including chief of the Division of Otology and Neurotology and director of the Douglas Grant Cochlear Implant Center. His research focuses on the genetics of hearing loss and cochlear gene therapy, supported by NIH grants. He has published more than 125 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters and co-edited the textbook Clinical Neurotology: Diagnosing and Managing Disorders of Hearing, Balance and the Facial Nerve. Dr. Lustig is a member of professional organizations including the American Otologic Society and the American Neurotology Society.
