Professor Lee Smith is Professor of Public Health in the Faculty of Science and Engineering at Anglia Ruskin University, within the School of Psychology, Sport and Sensory Sciences. He is an epidemiologist whose expertise centres on physical activity and sedentary behaviour. Professor Smith leads the COVID-19 research group at ARU and the Health, Performance and Wellbeing research theme. His research examines ways to increase physical activity levels and reduce sedentary behaviour across the lifespan and in special populations, including the relationship between these behaviours and health outcomes, physical activity in cancer survivorship, and interventions using mobile phone apps.
Professor Smith holds a PhD in Epidemiology from the University of Cambridge, an MSc in Physical Activity and Health, and a BSc in Applied Sport Science, both from Loughborough University. Prior to his current role, he served as a Senior Scientist at University College London and as Reader in Public Health at ARU. He has led research grants, published extensively in his field, and is recognised among the world’s most highly cited researchers. Professor Smith supervises research on topics including the physical environment and physical activity, sedentary behaviour reduction techniques, and physical activity intervention development.
