About Leo

Leo Cheng is a Professor at the Auckland Bioengineering Institute at the University of Auckland. He graduated from the University of Auckland with a Bachelor of Engineering in Engineering Science with First Class Honours in 1997 and a PhD in Bioengineering. Cheng leads research in gastrointestinal and uterine motility and electrophysiology, with main interests in understanding electrophysiological events in the muscles and organs of the human body and their relationship to mechanical function, including the gastrointestinal tract, skeletal muscle, and the heart.

Cheng is a Principal Investigator at the Riddet Institute. He has received the MacDiarmid Medal and a Humboldt Research Award. His career includes appointments as Professor at the Auckland Bioengineering Institute and prior roles as Associate Professor and Adjunct Research Assistant Professor. Cheng maintains an active research profile with numerous grants and publications focused on bioengineering applications in motility and electrophysiology.
