Leonard Chitongo is a Senior Lecturer in Human Geography in the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences at Walter Sisulu University. He holds a PhD from the University of the Free State (Qwaqwa Campus), awarded in 2017 for his thesis examining the efficacy of smallholder tobacco farmers on rural development in Zimbabwe. With over 15 years of academic experience, Chitongo previously served as a permanent full-time lecturer in the Department of Rural and Urban Development at Great Zimbabwe University from 2011 to 2023, where he taught and supervised students in areas including livelihood development, land conservation, public policy analysis, project planning and management, planning theory, quantitative techniques, and rural development thought and practice. He also completed a postdoctoral research fellowship at the University of KwaZulu-Natal from 2020 to 2021 and earlier roles as a graduate teaching assistant at the University of Zimbabwe and a high school teacher of geography.
Chitongo’s research specializations center on human geography, with particular emphasis on climate resilience, community development, public policy, and rural livelihoods in Zimbabwe and South Africa. His scholarly output includes numerous peer-reviewed articles and book chapters on topics such as rural livelihood resilience strategies under harsh climatic conditions, the impacts of climate change and cyclones, the role of NGOs and beekeeping in rural development, ecotourism and local economic development, public-private partnerships in housing, and gendered dimensions of agriculture and climate impacts. He has contributed to publications in journals including Cogent Social Sciences, the Journal of Human Ecology, and the Asian Journal of Management Sciences and Education. In addition to his teaching and research, Chitongo has served as an external examiner and participated in academic workshops on research grant writing.
