Professor Lesley Anderson is the University of Aberdeen’s Interdisciplinary Institute Director for Health, Nutrition and Wellbeing and holds a Personal Chair in Health Data Science. She joined the University in March 2020 after serving as Deputy Director of the Northern Ireland Cancer Registry. Anderson trained at Queen’s University Belfast, where she earned a BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Science in 2001 and a PhD in cancer epidemiology in 2004. She also holds an MPHe in Population Health from the University of Manchester (2006, distinction) and a PGCHET from Queen’s University Belfast (2009). Prior to her current role, she completed an Academic Fellowship funded by the UK Medical Research Council and a Cancer Prevention Fellowship at the National Cancer Institute in the United States, and she joined Queen’s University Belfast as an academic in 2010.
Anderson has more than 24 years of experience in health data science and public health research, with a primary focus on cancer epidemiology, artificial intelligence evaluation in medical imaging, and global health partnerships. Her work includes leading the MOSAICC study on myeloproliferative neoplasms and contributing to the iCAIRD programme on AI for diagnostics. She serves on multiple committees, including the Cancer Research UK Prevention and Population Research Committee and the Scientific Advisory Board of the eHealth-Hub for Cancer in Ireland. Anderson has received awards such as the Data Driven Innovation Award for the GEMINI study and the Positive Research Culture Award from the University of Aberdeen.
