Professor Letlhokwa George Mpedi is Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University of Johannesburg. He completed a B Juris degree in 1996 and an LLB degree in 1998 at Vista University. In 2001, he received an LLM degree in Labour Law from the then Rand Afrikaans University, now the University of Johannesburg. He was awarded an LLD degree in Mercantile Law by the University of Johannesburg in 2006. Professor Mpedi twice received the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst award, in 2000 and 2001, to conduct research in Germany for his LLM dissertation and LLD thesis. He began his academic career as a Junior Lecturer in the Department of Mercantile Law at Vista University and later joined the Centre for International and Comparative Labour and Social Security Law as a researcher. In 2003, he served as a Research Fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Social Law in Munich, Germany, and upon returning in 2006, he became Deputy Director of the Centre.
Before his appointment as Vice-Chancellor and Principal in March 2023, Professor Mpedi served as Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Academic and Executive Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Johannesburg. He has lectured in labour law and social security law to undergraduate, postgraduate and certificate students and has presented papers at numerous national and international conferences. Professor Mpedi has published widely on social security and labour law in South Africa, Southern Africa and Anglophone Africa. His recent publications include the co-authored book Labour Law in Ghana, published in 2022 by LexisNexis South Africa. He is an NRF-rated scholar in the B category, recognising considerable international recognition by peers.
