She holds a PhD in Chemistry and has more than 30 years of experience in academic and research roles. Her career began as a lecturer at Deakin University in 1999, with promotion to senior lecturer there in 2005. She joined Victoria University as an associate professor in 2006 and later served as research professor at the University of South Australia from 2010. She subsequently held a professorship in civil and environmental engineering at Khalifa University in the United Arab Emirates before returning to Australia.
Professor Zou’s research focuses on the development of nanostructured materials, including membranes, adsorbents, and electrodes, for water purification and desalination technologies, as well as cloud seeding materials. She has published numerous journal articles as senior author, with a Google Scholar h-index of approximately 58 to 60, and holds several patents related to 2D nanomaterials. She has supervised 15 PhD students to completion as main advisor. Her contributions have been recognized with the UAE Government Golden Visa for scientific excellence in 2019 and inclusion in the Stanford University ranking of the top 2 percent of scientists in 2020 and 2021.
