About Lisa

Dr Lisa Mullen is a Reader in Biochemistry at Brighton and Sussex Medical School, associated with the University of Brighton. She holds a BSc in Biology from the University of Surrey, an MSc in Physiology from the University of London, and a PhD from the University of London for research on the interactions of the neuroendocrine and innate immune systems. She undertook postdoctoral research at University College London, Imperial College London, and Barts and The London Medical School, focusing on innate immunity, inflammation, and autoimmune disease. Mullen joined BSMS as a senior postdoctoral fellow in 2013 and was appointed to her current position in 2014.

Her research interests centre on inflammation and innate immunity in the context of autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis, with particular emphasis on cytokine biology, the role of oxidative stress and redox regulation in chronic inflammation, and the development of engineered cytokines and enzymes as novel therapies using latency-associated peptide technology for targeted delivery. She leads the teaching of biochemistry at BSMS, contributing to Modules 103 and 104, offers Student Selected Components, serves as Academic Lead for the Phase 1 Academic skills programme, and supervises student research projects. Selected publications include 'Development of ‘Redox Arrays’ for identifying novel glutathionylated proteins in the secretome' (Scientific Reports, 2015), 'Pattern recognition receptors as potential therapeutic targets in inflammatory rheumatic disease' (Arthritis Research & Therapy, 2015), and multiple papers on latent cytokines for targeted therapy of inflammatory disorders (Expert Opinion on Drug Delivery, 2014).
