Lisa Rosen-Metsch is the ninth Dean of Columbia University’s School of General Studies and the first alumna to hold the position. She is also Professor of Sociomedical Sciences at the Mailman School of Public Health. Previously, she served as Chair and Stephen Smith Professor of Sociomedical Sciences at the Mailman School. Before joining Columbia, she was Professor of Epidemiology at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, where she directed the Division of Health Services Research and Policy and held secondary appointments in the Departments of Medicine and Sociology. She earned a B.A. from Columbia University’s School of General Studies in 1990, a B.A. from List College of the Jewish Theological Seminary, and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Florida.
A medical sociologist, Dean Rosen-Metsch is an internationally recognized scholar whose research focuses on the social determinants of health, with particular emphasis on access to care for persons living with HIV and substance use disorders. Her work has been continuously funded by the National Institutes of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for more than two decades and has produced over 270 publications in journals including JAMA, Addiction, and the American Journal of Public Health. Landmark studies by Dean Rosen-Metsch have informed national policy and intervention programs on HIV testing and prevention. She has received multiple teaching awards, co-directs an NIH-funded training program, and has taught undergraduate courses such as “AIDS and U.S. Society.” As Dean, she has expanded fundraising for student financial aid, launched new dual-degree programs, and advanced initiatives supporting social justice and women student veterans.
