About Luca

Professor Luca Benini is a Full Professor at the Department of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering at ETH Zurich, where he holds the Chair of Digital Circuits and Systems. He is also a Full Professor of Electronics at the University of Bologna. He received his Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from Stanford University in 1997. His research focuses on energy-efficient parallel computing systems, smart sensing micro-systems, and machine learning hardware. Benini has published more than 1,000 peer-reviewed papers and five books. He served as Chief Architect at STMicroelectronics for the Platform 2012 project from 2009 to 2012. He has held leadership roles in major conferences, including as general chair and program chair of the Design, Automation and Test in Europe Conference, and has served on technical program and organizing committees for events such as the Design Automation Conference and the International Symposium on Low Power Electronics and Design. Benini is an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Computer-Aided Design of Circuits and Systems and the ACM Transactions on Embedded Computing Systems. He is a Fellow of the IEEE and the ACM, a member of the Academia Europaea, and an ERC Advanced Grant recipient. His honors include the 2016 IEEE CAS Mac Van Valkenburg Award, the 2019 IEEE TCAD Donald O. Pederson Best Paper Award, the 2020 ACM/IEEE A. Richard Newton Award, the 2020 EDAA Achievement Award, and the 2023 IEEE CS Edward J. McCluskey Technical Achievement Award.
