About Ludger

Professor Ludger Wirtz is a Full Professor in Physics at the University of Luxembourg, where he serves in the Faculty of Science, Technology and Medicine and heads the Department of Physics and Materials Science. He leads a research group focused on theoretical solid-state physics. Wirtz studied physics at the University of Bonn in Germany and the University of Tennessee in Knoxville in the United States. He received his PhD in 2001 from the Vienna University of Technology in Austria. Following his doctorate, he completed a postdoctoral stay in San Sebastián, Spain, and subsequently worked as a CNRS researcher at the Institute for Electronics, Microelectronics, and Nanotechnology in Lille, France. In 2012, he was appointed Full Professor of physics at the University of Luxembourg.

Wirtz’s research centers on theoretical solid-state physics, including ab-initio calculations applied to semiconductors, graphene, and other materials. His work involves theoretical spectroscopy, examining the interaction of light with materials through techniques such as Raman spectroscopy, optical absorption, and luminescence. The group applies computational methods based on many-body perturbation theory particularly to two-dimensional materials and defects in semiconductors. He has authored approximately 100 papers, three book chapters, and holds one patent.
