About Luke

Dr Luke McAlary is a researcher at the University of Wollongong whose work centres on the pathobiology of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and motor neurone disease (MND). He completed his undergraduate degree, honours project and PhD at UOW, with his research focusing on mutations in the SOD1 protein and their role in disease. After completing his PhD, Dr McAlary undertook postdoctoral research in Canada on MND before returning to the Yerbury Lab at UOW, where he has continued his investigations into protein misfolding, aggregation and neurodegeneration.

Dr McAlary holds the position of Bill Gole MND Postdoctoral Fellow in the School of Chemistry and Molecular Bioscience. Following the passing of Professor Justin Yerbury, he has taken on a leadership role within the Yerbury Lab, supporting ongoing research efforts and colleagues. His contributions include service roles such as Chair of the School of Science EMCR Advisory Board and Founder and Chair of the Wollongong Imaging Network. Dr McAlary’s research has been supported by funding from organisations including FightMND, and he maintains active involvement in the field of neurodegenerative disease research at Molecular Horizons.
