About Mabutho

Professor Mabutho Sibanda is Dean and Head of the School of Accounting, Economics and Finance in the College of Law and Management Studies at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. He holds the position of Professor of Finance and serves as founding director of the UKZN Business Rescue Unit. His expertise encompasses financial markets, corporate finance and risk management. Sibanda delivered his inaugural lecture titled Business Finance in Post-Apartheid South Africa: Views and Evidence, in which he examined trends in business financing, the shift from equity to debt finance, and the role of corporate financial management in strategic decision-making and economic growth.

Sibanda is an interdisciplinary scholar with research interests in development finance, financial markets, credit, risk modelling, corporate finance and health financing in support of United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. He has authored more than 80 accredited publications and maintains an active Google Scholar profile with citations exceeding 1,100. He is an associate member of the Institute of Bankers of South Africa and the Institute of Risk Management of South Africa. Sibanda mentors academic staff and students, supports fundraising initiatives for disadvantaged students, and contributes to project development, feasibility studies and capital-raising efforts. He previously held a position at the National University of Science and Technology.
