Professor Madhavi Latha Gali is a professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, where she also serves as chair of the Centre for Sustainable Technologies. She earned a B.Tech in Civil Engineering in 1992 from Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Kakinada, graduating with first class and distinction. She obtained an M.Tech in Geotechnical Engineering from the National Institute of Technology, Warangal, receiving a gold medal for academic excellence, and completed her Ph.D. in Civil Engineering at IIT Madras in 2000. Following her doctorate, she conducted postdoctoral research at IISc from 2002 to 2003 and served as an assistant professor at IIT Guwahati from 2003 to 2004 before joining the IISc faculty in the Department of Civil Engineering in 2004. She was the first female faculty member in that department.
Her research focuses on geotechnical engineering, including soil reinforcement, geosynthetics, and rock mechanics, with contributions to projects such as the Chenab Rail Bridge as a geotechnical consultant. She is a fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering and has received awards including the S.K. Chatterjee Outstanding Researcher Award from IISc, the Ramoji Excellence Award in Science and Technology, the Vishwakarma Award, and the Avinash Shirode Yashokirti Award. She has supervised numerous graduate students and contributed to geotechnical engineering education and research in India.
