About Manuela

Manuela Campa is a Lecturer in the Department of Genetics at Stellenbosch University. She holds a PhD in Biotechnology from the University of Insubria in Italy and has a background in plant biotechnology. Her research focuses on the application of plant biotechnology and genome editing to improve crop resilience and sustainability, with particular emphasis on grapevine. She leads the Vitis laboratory, where work centres on CRISPR/Cas-based approaches for enhancing disease resistance and drought tolerance in grapevine, as well as molecular detection systems for plant pathogens.

Dr Campa teaches undergraduate and postgraduate courses in molecular genetics, genome editing, and plant genetics and crop improvement. Recent research from her group has demonstrated the potential of genome editing to boost resistance to disease and drought in grapevine. She is originally from Italy and contributes to advancements in new breeding technologies for food and fruit crops.
