About Márcio

Márcio Bezerra Santos is a professor at the Complexo de Ciências Médicas e de Enfermagem (CCME) of Universidade Federal de Alagoas (UFAL), Campus Arapiraca. He holds a bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences from Universidade Estadual de Alagoas (UNEAL, 2010), a master's degree in Parasitology Biology from Universidade Federal de Sergipe (UFS, 2012), and a doctorate in Health Sciences with a research line in Immunology of Infectious and Parasitic Diseases from UFS (2017). His doctoral work included a sandwich period at the Infectious Disease Research Institute (IDRI) in Seattle, USA (2016–2017), where he worked on cloning and purification of crude and recombinant antigens from Mycobacterium leprae.

Bezerra Santos previously served as an effective professor at UFS from 2013 to 2022 and is currently a permanent professor in the Postgraduate Program in Health Sciences (PPGCS) at both UFS (CAPES 6) and UFAL (CAPES 5). He is a researcher at the Laboratory of Immunology and Molecular Biology at the University Hospital of UFS (LIBM/HU-UFS) and the Laboratory of Immunology, Microbiology and Parasitology at UFAL Campus Arapiraca. His research focuses on evaluating the immune response to infectious and parasitic diseases, with emphasis on immunological biomarkers and recombinant antigens of Mycobacterium leprae and Schistosoma mansoni, as well as the immune response in leprosy and schistosomiasis mansoni. He has experience in active teaching methodologies such as problem-based learning (PBL) and in studies on the epidemiology of infectious and parasitic diseases and health geoprocessing.
