Dr Maria Armoudian is an Associate Professor in Politics and International Relations in the Faculty of Arts and Education at the University of Auckland. She serves as Director of the University of Auckland Sustainability Hub and co-director of the Ngā Ara Whetū Centre for Climate, Biodiversity and Society. Her research focuses on political communication, human rights, genocide, American politics, sustainability and good governance. In 2023, she received the Early Career Research Excellence Award for Social Sciences from the Royal Society Te Apārangi. Armoudian is the author of the books Reporting from the Danger Zone: Frontline Journalists, Their Jobs and an Increasingly Perilous Future, Kill the Messenger and Lawyers Beyond Borders. She is also the host and producer of the syndicated radio programme The Scholars' Circle.
Armoudian has held her current academic appointment at the University of Auckland since 2014. Her work connects sustainability with human rights and governance, supporting the university’s efforts in research, teaching and outreach. She contributes to initiatives such as the Sustainable Action Network and Living Labs, helping embed sustainability across university activities.
