Maria Daniela Hurtado Andrade, M.D., Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor of Medicine and Consultant in the Division of Endocrinology, Department of Internal Medicine at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida. She earned her medical degree from Pontificia Universidad Católica del Ecuador, followed by a Ph.D. in Physiology and Pharmacology and a Clinical and Translational Sciences Certificate from the University of Florida College of Medicine. She completed an internal medicine residency at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and an endocrinology fellowship at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, joining the Mayo Clinic staff in 2019. As a physician-scientist, her work centers on understanding the pathophysiology of obesity and its metabolic complications to develop personalized therapeutic interventions. She is affiliated with the Mayo Clinic Precision Medicine for Obesity program and focuses on specific populations including perimenopausal women and breast cancer survivors, as well as sex differences in obesity and rare genetic disorders of obesity. Her professional engagements include serving on the editorial board of Obesity Pillars, the Maintenance of Certification Committee of the American Board of Obesity Medicine, and as a spokesperson for The Obesity Society. She has received numerous awards and honors, including the 2026 Rising Star in Endocrinology Award from the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, multiple Mayo Clinic research and innovation awards, grants from the Women's Health Research Center, and recognition for outstanding abstracts from the Endocrine Society. Dr. Hurtado Andrade holds certifications in internal medicine, endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism, and obesity medicine.
She contributes to committees such as the Mayo Clinic Nutrition and Obesity Research Program executive board and guideline panels for the Obesity Medicine Association. Her clinical interests encompass overweight and obesity management, weight management through the menopausal transition and in breast cancer survivors, genetic disorders associated with obesity, bariatric medicine, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, dyslipidemia, and fatty liver disease. Dr. Hurtado Andrade speaks English and Spanish and is involved in various professional memberships including the Endocrine Society, American Diabetes Association, and The Obesity Society.
