Dr Maria-Eugenia Pereyra is a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Cape Town. A biologist from Argentina, she completed her studies at the Universidad Nacional de La Plata, Argentina, where she earned her PhD between 2016 and 2020 from the Facultad de Ciencias Naturales y Museo. Her doctoral research centered on osteohistology in both extant and extinct sauropsids.
Since completing her PhD, Dr Pereyra has focused on investigating bone microstructure to infer growth dynamics, metabolic implications, and life history traits in reptiles. Her current research at the University of Cape Town explores the growth dynamics of neosuchian crocodiles through analysis of postcranial bone microstructure in both extant and extinct species. She aims to establish a robust comparative framework for reconstructing their life history and evolutionary trajectories by integrating histological data with paleobiological and ecological perspectives. Dr Pereyra has contributed to publications examining stochastic growth marks in Crocodylus niloticus and the growth dynamics of Caiman latirostris. She has been affiliated with the University of Cape Town since 2023.
