Dr. Maria K. Oosthuizen serves as Extraordinary Lecturer in the Department of Zoology and Entomology at the University of Pretoria. She earned her PhD from the University of Pretoria in the Department of Zoology and Entomology. Her research centers on the physiology, behaviour, neurobiology, and chronobiology of African mole-rats and other rodents, with particular emphasis on circadian rhythms, activity patterns, sociality, and adaptations in subterranean species.

Dr. Oosthuizen has contributed to numerous peer-reviewed publications examining topics such as the effects of light, temperature, and social factors on biological rhythms in mole-rats and related rodents. Her work appears in journals including the Journal of Experimental Biology, Physiology & Behavior, and Frontiers in Ecology and Evolution. She maintains an active research profile focused on these areas within the Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences.
