About Mariana

Mariana Bernardi Bif is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Ocean Sciences at the University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Earth Science. She earned her PhD in Ocean Sciences with a focus on marine biogeochemistry from the University of Miami. Prior to her faculty appointment, she served as a researcher at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI).

Her research specializations include marine biogeochemistry and the carbon cycle. Bif utilizes data from Biogeochemical-Argo floats to investigate ocean processes, including shifts in nitrogen-carbon cycling within oxygen-deficient zones. She has also examined the effects of marine heatwaves on ocean food webs and the transport of carbon to the deep sea. Her recent publications include a 2025 paper in Nature Communications on marine heatwaves and a 2026 paper in Nature Communications Earth & Environment on BGC-Argo float data. Bif leads the BIF Lab at the University of Miami.
