She began her research career in 1997 as a microbiologist at the National Institute for Research and Development in Microbiology and Immunology “I. Cantacuzino” in Bucharest. She received fellowships from the International Network of Pasteur Institutes in Bangui in 1999 and Paris in 2000. In 2005 she completed her PhD thesis titled “Host-parasite relationship. Opportunistic infections in HIV-infected patients” at the University of Bucharest. From 2001 to 2009 she served as National Data Manager for Romania in the European Antimicrobial Surveillance System (EARSS). She joined the teaching staff of the University of Bucharest Faculty of Biology in 2003 and has held her current professorial position since then. She is a PhD supervisor, Director of the Doctoral School of Ecology, and Coordinator of the Life, Environmental and Earth Sciences Division of the Research Institute of the University of Bucharest (ICUB). Professor Chifiriuc has coordinated or served as key member in 17 internally financed research grants and participated as a team member in 50 national and international projects. She has authored more than 200 ISI-indexed research papers with a Scopus h-index of 30, a Web of Science h-index of 27, and over 3,500 citations. Her main research focuses include phenotypic and genotypic investigation of virulence and antimicrobial resistance reservoirs in clinical and environmental settings, host-pathogen interactions during infection, and evaluation of the antimicrobial activity of novel compounds including nanostructures and nanomaterials.
