About Marie

Marie Carrière holds a PhD in Comparative Literature, an MA in English, and a BA in English and Lettres françaises. She serves as Professor of English and Vice-Dean (Research) in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Alberta. She previously directed the Centre for Literatures in Canada from 2008 to 2020 and held the position of Associate Dean (Research) in the Faculty of Arts. Her academic career also includes appointments at the University of New Brunswick and Trent University. In her current role, she returned as Vice-Dean (Research) effective July 1, 2024, following a period of administrative leave.

Carrière researches and teaches in the fields of Canadian and Québécois literatures, with particular interests in contemporary fiction and poetry, feminist and queer studies, Indigenous writing, crisis literature, comparative approaches, and feminist ecologies. Her work examines present-day expressions of feminism in Canadian, Indigenous, and Québécois literatures, focusing on feminist ecologies, intersectionality, material feminisms, and the ethics of care. Key publications include the single-authored book Cautiously Hopeful: Metafeminist Practices in Canada (2020), the co-edited volumes All the Feels: Affect and Writing in Canada/Tous les sens: Affect et écriture au Canada (2021) and Living and Learning with Feminist Ethics, Literature, and Art (2024), as well as Writing in the Feminine in French and English Canada: A Question of Ethics (2002), Médée protéiforme (2012), and Regenerations: Canadian Women’s Writing/Régénérations: écriture des femmes au Canada (2014, co-edited). She has also published numerous articles on topics such as the ethics of care in the writing of Louise Dupré and metafeminism in post-9/11 Canadian and Québécois literature. Carrière has taught courses in Canadian literature, Québécois and French-Canadian literature, critical theory, and women’s writing, favoring seminar formats that combine lectures, media, and discussion.
