Marina Romanello is a Principal Research Fellow at the UCL Institute for Global Health and serves as Executive Director of the Lancet Countdown: Tracking Progress on Health and Climate Change. She trained as a clinical biochemist at the Universidad de Buenos Aires in Argentina and earned a PhD in biomedical sciences from the University of Cambridge. Her research background spans toxicology, environmental health, and climate change, with prior positions at the Instituto Tecnológico de Buenos Aires, the University of Cambridge, and the Francis Crick Institute. In her current role at UCL, Romanello leads a multidisciplinary team producing annual reports on the health impacts of climate change and tracks global progress on related indicators. She previously led research supporting the development of England’s National Health Service net-zero commitments and participates in multiple advisory boards focused on health and climate change initiatives. Romanello holds the honorary designation HonMFPH and was named National Champion for the United Kingdom in the 2025 Frontiers Planet Prize for her contributions in this field.
