About Mark

Professor Mark E. Smith CBE FInstP has served as President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Southampton since October 2019. He previously held the position of Vice-Chancellor at Lancaster University and was Professor of Solid State NMR in its Department of Chemistry from 2012. His academic career includes a BA in Natural Sciences from the University of Cambridge and a PhD in physics from the University of Warwick, completed in 1987, with a thesis focused on multinuclear magnetic resonance studies of ceramic phases.

Professor Smith specialises in nuclear magnetic resonance and materials physics. He has published more than 380 papers on advanced magnetic resonance techniques applied to a range of problems in materials science. He received a CBE in the 2019 Queen’s Birthday Honours for services to research and higher education. He chairs Advance HE’s Board of Trustees and serves as a member of Research England’s Council. Professor Smith is a Fellow of the Institute of Physics.
