About Marlize

Professor Marlize Lombard serves as Research Chair and Professor of Cognitive and Stone Age Archaeology at the University of Johannesburg in the Faculty of Humanities. She is affiliated with the Palaeo-Research Institute, where her work centers on the biological, behavioural and cognitive evolution of Homo sapiens during the Middle Stone Age in sub-Saharan Africa, particularly southern Africa. Her research agenda seeks to generate integrated knowledge about these evolutionary processes and their interrelations through a human techno-behaviour-neuro-genetic coevolutionary lens, aiming to develop testable hypotheses regarding the species' development in the region.

She received her PhD in Archaeology from the University of the Witwatersrand. Until December 2018, she held the position of Director of the Centre for Anthropological Research at the University of Johannesburg. Her scholarly contributions are extensively cited, exceeding 9,000 citations on Google Scholar, reflecting significant impact in Stone Age archaeology and studies of human behavioural and cognitive evolution.
