Martin David Mulligan is a medical doctor and researcher affiliated with the College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences at the University of Galway. He holds the degrees MB BCh BAO and completed a PhD in medicine at the University of Galway. His doctoral research, supervised by Professor Emer McGrath, examined risk factors and biomarkers for pre-clinical and clinical dementia.
Dr Mulligan served as lead author on a 2026 study published in Neurology Open Access that identified an association between higher circulating vitamin D levels in midlife and lower levels of tau protein deposition in the brain among dementia-free adults, based on data from the Framingham Heart Study. He has co-authored additional peer-reviewed publications, including work on bias assessment and correction for population attributable fractions and research examining associations between nerve growth factor and clinical stroke as well as covert brain infarcts. Dr Mulligan maintains affiliations with institutions including Beaumont Hospital in Dublin.
