Professor Martine Maron is Professor of Environmental Management in the School of the Environment at the University of Queensland. She holds a Bachelor (Honours) of Science (Advanced) and a Doctor of Philosophy from Monash University, as well as a Postgraduate Diploma from the University of Southern Queensland. Her research focuses on conservation policy, with particular emphasis on biodiversity net gain approaches, the design and application of biodiversity offsetting, and the conservation and restoration of Australia’s woodlands and woodland bird assemblages. She collaborates extensively with government and non-government organisations to translate research into policy and management outcomes at state, national, and international levels.
Professor Maron chairs the IUCN’s Impact Mitigation and Ecological Compensation Thematic Group and serves as a director of BirdLife Australia and the Australian Wildlife Conservancy. She is a member of the Wentworth Group of Concerned Scientists and The Biodiversity Council, and her research group forms part of the Centre for Biodiversity and Conservation Science at the University of Queensland. Her work has contributed to international policy development, including input to the Convention on Biological Diversity, the UN Convention to Combat Desertification, and IUCN guidelines on biodiversity offsetting. She has also influenced Australian environmental policy through contributions to threatened species listings and offset assessment tools under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act.
