Mary Buchanan is a Research Fellow in the Department of Public Health at the University of Otago, Wellington. She holds a BA (Hons) and completed her PhD at the University of Otago in 2024. Her doctoral research examined protective factors following cumulative childhood adversity in Aotearoa New Zealand, with a focus on social support and education as sources of resilience.
Her research interests include childhood adversity, resilience, neurodiversity, intellectual disability, and the health and wellbeing impacts of homelessness on children and young people. Buchanan has contributed to publications on topics such as people with disabilities in emergency housing, housing assistance and youth offending, and working with community research partners on sensitive public health interviews. She has a background in developmental psychology and prior experience as a support worker and teacher assistant.
