Mary E. D'Alton, MD, is the Willard C. Rappleye Professor of Obstetrics & Gynecology at Columbia University Irving Medical Center. She is a globally recognized expert in maternal-fetal medicine. Dr. D'Alton received her medical degree from the National University of Ireland in 1976. She completed an internship at University College, Galway, a residency at Ottawa General Hospital, and fellowships at Yale New Haven Hospital and Tufts University Hospital. She holds board certifications in Obstetrics and Gynecology and Maternal-Fetal Medicine.
Dr. D'Alton has served in multiple leadership roles at Columbia University and NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia, including as Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons and as obstetrician and gynecologist-in-chief. She led the development of the Carmen and John Thain Center for Prenatal Pediatrics, launched in 2010, and the Mothers Center, launched in 2018, both focused on multidisciplinary care for complex pregnancies. She has authored or contributed to more than 300 peer-reviewed publications and co-authored the book Fetology: Diagnosis and Management of the Fetal Patient, which received the Association of American Publishers Award for Best Textbook in Clinical Medicine in 2001. Dr. D'Alton is co-editor of Seminars in Perinatology and has served on the editorial board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. She has held presidencies in organizations including the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine, the American Gynecological and Obstetrical Society, and the New York Obstetrical Society. In 2013, she was elected to the National Academy of Medicine. Her honors include the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine in 2006 and the Seymour Milstein Distinguished Service Award in 2019. She has also served as co-chair of ACOG District II's Safe Motherhood Initiative.
