Mary Walsh is an Associate Professor in the Canberra School of Politics, Economics & Society at the University of Canberra, within the Faculty of Business, Government & Law. She serves as Program Director of the Bachelor of Politics and International Relations degree and the Bachelor of Philosophy Honours Program. She is also the Founding Patron of the Politics, International Relations and National Security student association (PIRaNaS). Walsh holds a PhD from the University of Queensland, awarded in 1996, with a thesis focused on sexual difference, feminisms and political theory.
Her research specializations include Australian politics, political theory, identity politics and Indigenous politics. Walsh has authored or co-authored numerous publications, including the book Government and Democracy in Australia (Oxford University Press, 2009, with Ian Cook and John Harwood). Recent works include chapters and articles such as “The Revolving Door of Australian Prime Ministers” (2019), “Freedom from Democracy: Progressive Populism and the Rise of Global Corporate Power” in Democratic Theory (2018), “First above equals? Assessments of the Abbott Prime Ministership 2013–2015” in the Australian Journal of Political Science (2017), and contributions on topics including the Gillard Government and asylum seekers. Her work has appeared in outlets such as The Review of Politics and Democratic Theory.
