Dr Maryann Heather is a Senior Lecturer in the Pacific Health section of the School of Population Health within the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences at the University of Auckland. She holds a Bachelor of Human Biology (BHB) awarded in 1994 and a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) awarded in 1998. She also holds a Master of Aviation Medicine awarded in 2009, a Postgraduate Diploma in Occupational Medicine awarded in 2009, a Postgraduate Certificate in Travel Medicine awarded in 2009, and additional postgraduate qualifications in sports medicine. Dr Heather is a Fellow of the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners and maintains a clinical practice as a general practitioner in South Auckland.
Her academic work centres on Pacific health research, with involvement in projects examining co-designed health interventions, gout management among Pacific communities, urinary incontinence in Pasifika women, and broader determinants of health outcomes for Māori and Pacific populations. She has contributed to peer-reviewed publications on these topics and participates in teaching and research activities within the Pacific Health section. Dr Heather’s professional contributions include roles supporting Pacific leadership in health research initiatives at the university.
