About Masaki

Masaki Shimamura is a Professor in the Graduate School of Integrated Sciences for Life at Hiroshima University. He earned his Bachelor of Science in the Botany course from the Department of Biological Science, Faculty of Science, Hiroshima University in 1995, followed by a Master of Science in 1997 and a Doctor of Science in 2000, both from the Department of Biological Science, Graduate School of Science at the same institution.

Shimamura has held progressive appointments at Hiroshima University, serving as Research Associate from 2006 to 2007, Assistant Professor from 2007 to 2014, Associate Professor from 2014 onward, and advancing to Professor. Earlier, he worked as a Researcher at the Research Institute of Innovative Technology for the Earth from 2003 to 2006 and held a JSPS Research Fellowship for Young Scientists from 2000 to 2003. His research centers on the taxonomy, phylogeny, morphology, and developmental biology of bryophytes, including liverworts and mosses, with extensive work on Marchantia species as model systems. He manages the Herbarium of Hiroshima University (HIRO) and conducts studies on comparative morphology, molecular phylogenetics, cell division mechanisms in land plants, and reproductive processes in bryophytes. Notable publications include the 2016 review “Marchantia polymorpha: Taxonomy, Phylogeny and Morphology of a Model System” in Plant and Cell Physiology, along with numerous papers on Marchantia genomics, taxonomy of Japanese Marchantia taxa, and evolutionary aspects of plant cell structures. His contributions advance understanding of bryophyte diversity, evolution, and the origins of land plant features.
