About Masoud
Masoud Akhtar is an EAP Teaching Fellow at the Birmingham International Academy of the University of Birmingham. He teaches on the Medical and Life Sciences pathway with particular interests in Microbiology, Parasitology, Molecular Biology, and Environmental Health. Akhtar holds a B.Sc. in Microbiology, an M.Sc. in Environmental Health, and is a candidate for a Ph.D. in Immunology and Immunotherapy. He also possesses a PGCE in Science Education specialising in Biology and Chemistry, Qualified Teacher Status from the General Teaching Council for England, and a NEBOSH International General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety. He is an elected Member of the Royal Society of Biology.
Akhtar has teaching experience across the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates, and China. Prior to his current role, he worked as a Microbiologist and Parasitologist on projects involving Cryptosporidium, Mycobacterium, Leishmaniasis, and E. coli O157 at the University of Birmingham’s Institute of Child Health and the Institute of Immunity and Infection. He has held leadership positions for over eight years, including as Head of Faculty and Chair of Science and Technology at institutes in China and the UAE. His current research focuses on the structure and composition of cell membranes, the development of molecular probes, the application of super-resolution microscopy to study lipid roles in cellular membranes, and biorisk management in high containment laboratories along with occupational health and safety. Akhtar leads or co-leads modules including Human Biology, Molecular and Cellular Biology, Advanced Study Skills in Biological Sciences, Living Organisms, and Earth and Environmental Sciences.
