About Matire

Professor Matire Harwood is a professor at the University of Auckland in the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences, where she serves as Deputy Dean. She is a Kaupapa Māori clinical academic with expertise in Māori health, focusing on reducing health inequities through improved indigenous health and well-being. Harwood graduated with an MBChB from the University of Auckland in 1994 and earned a PhD from the University of Otago in 2012, with her doctoral thesis examining stroke recovery for Māori and their whānau. Her research applies Kaupapa Māori principles to clinical studies in areas such as cardiovascular disease, asthma, diabetes, and stroke, and she has led interventions that influenced treatment guidelines.

Harwood teaches in the MBChB programme for Years 4 to 6, supervises postgraduate students, and practices as a general practitioner at Papakura Marae Health Clinic. She co-directs Tōmaiora, the Māori health research group at Te Kupenga Hauora Māori, and edits the Māori Health Review. Her work has appeared in journals including The BMJ, The Lancet Respiratory Medicine, and The New Zealand Medical Journal. Harwood has received awards such as the 2017 New Zealand L'Oréal UNESCO For Women in Science Fellowship, the 2018 Matariki Award for Improving Māori Health, the 2019 Health Research Council Te Tohu Rapuora Award, and the King's Service Medal in 2024 for services to Māori health.
