About Matthew

Professor Matthew J. Harrington is a faculty member in the Department of Chemistry at McGill University. He holds a B.A. from the University of Delaware (2002) and a Ph.D. from the University of California, Santa Barbara (2008). Following his doctorate, he completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces (2008–2010) as an Alexander von Humboldt Fellow and subsequently served as a research group leader there from 2010 to 2017. He is currently Associate Professor and Canada Research Chair Tier 2 in Green Chemistry, as well as Co-Director of the McGill Institute for Advanced Materials (MIAM).

His research focuses on understanding biochemical structure-property relationships in biological materials and applying these principles to the development of bio-inspired and green materials. Harrington has received the 2024 Award for Excellence in Materials Research from the Chemical Institute of Canada. He teaches courses including CHEM 334 Advanced Materials in the Faculty of Science.
