About Matthew

Matthew Kenyon is an Associate Professor in the Department of Art at the University at Buffalo, where he also serves as Director of Graduate Studies. He holds a BFA from Southeastern Louisiana University, awarded in 1999, and an MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University, awarded in 2002 in painting and printmaking. Kenyon is a new media artist whose practice centers on critical explorations of global corporate operations, mass media, military-industrial complexes, and the boundaries between reality and artificial life through his studio SWAMP (Studies of Work Atmospheres and Mass Production).

Prior to his appointment at the University at Buffalo, Kenyon held associate professor positions at the University of Michigan’s Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design and at the Rhode Island School of Design. In 2015, he received fellowships from TED and the MacDowell Colony. His notable works include The Notepad (2007), which is held in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art, along with exhibitions at institutions such as the ZKM Center for Art and Media, the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit, and SIGGRAPH. Kenyon has presented at TED Global and maintains an active exhibition record focused on new media sculpture and design interventions.
