Matthew Yiu Kwan is Assistant Clinical Professor (Adjunct) in the Department of Family Medicine and Adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Kinesiology at McMaster University. He is also Associate Professor in the Department of Child and Youth Studies at Brock University, where he serves as Canada Research Chair (Tier II) in Youth Mental Health and Performance and Director of the Infant, Child, and Youth Health Lab. Dr. Kwan holds formal training in kinesiology with a focus on health and exercise psychology. His research program examines the determinants of physical activity and other health-promoting behaviours and their effects on mental health and wellbeing from childhood through emerging adulthood, drawing on an interdisciplinary approach that integrates psychology, behavioural medicine, and population health. His work is guided by a socio-ecological perspective and is supported by funding from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, and the Rossy Family Foundation. Key publications include the 2019 paper “Physical literacy, physical activity and health: Toward an evidence-informed conceptual model” in Sports Medicine, the 2012 paper “Physical activity and other health-risk behaviors during the transition into early adulthood: a longitudinal cohort study” in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, and the 2014 paper “Sport participation and alcohol and illicit drug use in adolescents and young adults: A systematic review of longitudinal studies” in Addictive Behaviors. Dr. Kwan has contributed to numerous additional peer-reviewed articles on topics including movement behaviours, physical literacy interventions, and developmental coordination disorder.
