About Matthew

Professor Matthew Watt is Professor of Physiology and Associate Dean Research in the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences at the University of Melbourne. He obtained his PhD from Deakin University in 2002. He completed postdoctoral fellowships at the University of Guelph in Canada, RMIT University, and St. Vincent’s Institute. He then established a research team in the Department of Physiology at Monash University, where he held continuous National Health and Medical Research Council fellowships for over a decade. Professor Watt joined the University of Melbourne in 2018 as Professor and Head of the Department of Anatomy and Physiology. In this role, he leads the Metabolism and Diabetes laboratory, which investigates defects in lipid metabolism and inter-tissue communication that contribute to obesity-related disorders including type 2 diabetes and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. His research also examines metabolic vulnerabilities in prostate cancer. Professor Watt has established the open-access Melbourne Murine Metabolic Phenotyping Platform. He serves as Associate Editor for the American Journal of Physiology – Endocrinology and Metabolism and maintains links with the Australian Physiological Society. His work has attracted more than 21,000 citations.
