About Matthew

Matthew J. Wilson serves as President and Dean of Temple University, Japan Campus. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Political Science and a Bachelor of Arts in Asian Studies with a Japanese minor from the University of Utah in 1995, followed by a Juris Doctor from Temple University Beasley School of Law in 1999. Wilson began his academic career as an Associate Professor of Law at Temple University Beasley School of Law from 2003 to 2009, where he also served as senior associate dean and general counsel at the Japan campus. He subsequently held positions as Associate Professor and Professor of Law at the University of Wyoming College of Law from 2009 to 2014 and as Professor of Law at the University of Akron School of Law from 2014 to 2019, teaching courses including international business law, Japanese law, international dispute resolution, intellectual property law, internet law, torts, and negotiations. Wilson has held visiting professor appointments at universities in Japan, South Korea, and China.

Prior to returning to Temple University Japan in 2020 as President and Dean, Wilson served as president of the University of Akron and president of Missouri Western State University. In his current role, he has overseen significant enrollment growth, the launch of new academic programs such as computer science and tourism and hospitality management, expansion of faculty, and the establishment of a satellite campus in Kyoto. His scholarly contributions include nearly 20 articles, eight book chapters, and one book. Wilson is admitted to the Florida Bar and has professional experience as an international lawyer and general counsel in the United States and Japan.
