About Mayana

Mayana Zatz is a full professor of genetics at the Institute of Biosciences of the Universidade de São Paulo. She earned a BA in Biology from the University of São Paulo in 1968, followed by an M.Sc. in 1970 and a D.Sc. in Biological Sciences in 1974, both from the same institution. She completed a post-doctorate in Medical Genetics at the University of California, Los Angeles, in 1977 and obtained her livre-docência from the University of São Paulo in 1987.

Professor Zatz has served as a professor at the Institute of Biosciences since 1982 and previously held the position of Dean of Research at the Universidade de São Paulo from 2005 to 2009. She is the coordinator of the Human Genome Research Center and has focused her research on human and medical genetics, particularly neuromuscular disorders, stem cells, genomics, and healthy aging. Her work has contributed to advancements in the understanding of muscular dystrophies and genetic conditions. She has received numerous honors, including the National Order of Scientific Merit in 2000, the L'Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Award in 2001, the TWAS Prize in Medical Sciences in 2004, and the Premio México de Ciencia y Tecnología in 2008. Professor Zatz maintains an extensive publication record in peer-reviewed journals on topics in genetics and related fields.
