About Melissa

Dr Melissa Fong-Emmerson is a Lecturer and Researcher in the School of Business and Law at Edith Cowan University. She is a marketing academic whose research and teaching are grounded in over 15 years of professional practice across corporate, government and not-for-profit sectors, where she led integrated campaigns, stakeholder engagement and behaviour change initiatives. Her academic qualifications include a Doctor of Philosophy from Edith Cowan University in 2026, a Graduate Diploma of Education (Secondary) in Media Studies from Edith Cowan University in 2004, and a Bachelor of Communications with a major in Media Studies from Edith Cowan University in 2003.

Dr Fong-Emmerson’s research advances social marketing and consumer decision-making theory, with a particular focus on higher education equity, diversity and inclusion, and strength-based approaches to social justice and behaviour change. She incorporates Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander methodologies into her work and leads initiatives to embed Indigenous perspectives into curriculum and assessment. Her teaching covers marketing at undergraduate and postgraduate levels as well as executive education in digital marketing. She serves on the ANZMAC Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Subcommittee and the Marketing Management Journal Editorial Board. Her contributions have been recognised with a 2026 Citation for Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning from the Australian Awards for University Teaching, multiple Vice-Chancellor’s Staff Excellence Awards at Edith Cowan University, and School of Business and Law Dean’s Awards. Key recent publications include co-authored articles in Higher Education Research and Development (2026), Journal of Social Marketing (2025), and Australasian Marketing Journal (2024 and 2025) on topics such as Indigenous student journeys to higher education, consumer socialisation agents, and DEI in the marketing industry.
